Do you have any response to Foe saying on p.142: "We must make Friday's silence speak, as well as the silence surrounding Friday" ?

I think this was one of the only points in the story where I thought Foe wasn’t such a bad guy after all. He realized that there is more to Friday than what Susan sees and hears—that Friday has a story even though he couldn’t speak it.

Darcy, it's interesting what you think of Foe. :) Was he a "bad" guy, after all? He knows his trade and wants to do it best. He does not position himself as some philanthropist eager to help confused women. He tries to write books that will sell and support his living.
However, I can certainly see that this quote makes him more human to us.

He is determined to elevate the "wild" and glorify Friday's silence as nobel, in opposition to the linguistical, "civilized" view proposed by polite society.

I'm curious about the urgency with which Foe writes that they "must" bring about an understanding of Friday's silence. He seems to be the only one who made this connection in the novel. Do you think it is perhaps because his job is an author, and it's an author's job to breathe life into stories? Maybe he sees Friday as a source of new inspiration.

Foe got Cruso's story from Susan, and that was just about the short time she spent on the island with him, not his life story which could have been more interesting. Then Foe got a partial version of Susan's story, not what he really wanted which was more info about her time in Bahia. I think Friday's story would have been the most intriguing story of all, if someone could have found a way to to get him to tell it. Isn't he really the one character we all really want to know more about? Friday's story, if told, would have added another dimension to the story and would have definately breathed new life into it.

I agree with Anna. Friday's story would be so rich in so many aspects. He lived with Cruso for a long long time he must have had a deeper understanding about Cruso and his motivations. He stayed with crazy old Susan and the controversial story of his mutilation and survival as a castaway could make Foe lots of money. That aside, I think Foe had a genuine interest in helping Friday tell his story and communicate with others.
